Klaus Hellwig's career immediately took off after winning prizes at the "Marguérite Long - Jacques Thibaud" Competition in Paris and the "Viotti" Competition in Vercelli /Italy.
He studied with Detlef Kraus, Pierre Sancan (Paris), Guido Agosti (Accademia Chigiana Siena) and Wilhelm Kempff.
He gave concerts throughout Europe, the United States and Canada, Australia, Brazil, the Middle East and Asia. He was a soloist with orchestras such as the Deutsches Symphonie Orchester Berlin (formerly Radio Symphony Orchestra Berlin), het West German Radio Orchestra Cologne, het_11100000-000 0-0000-0000-000000000111_Bayrian Radio Orchestra of Munich and many others; the Hungarian Radio Orchestra Budapest, the Bucharest and Cracow Philharmonic Orchestra; the orchestras of Baltimore and San Francisco, and many others.
After teaching for 10 years at the Folkwang-Hochschule Essen, Klaus Hellwig started teaching at the Universität der Kunste Berlin. He gave master classes in Germany, France, Ukraine, Romania, Brazil, Korea and Japan.
He was a jury member in many competitions, including the Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow, the Leeds Competition, ARD competition in Munich_11100000-0000-000 0-0000-000000000111_(solo en_11100000-0000- 0000-0000-000000000111_piano duo), "Busoni" Competition in Bolzano, the Dublin Piano Competition, "Viotti"Competition in Vercelli/Italy,_11100000-0000-0000 -0000-000000000111_ "Robert Schumann" in Zwickau, “José Iturbi” in Valencia and Sendai (Japan) Competition.
He is one of the most successful pedagogues worldwide, his students won first prizes or became laureates in more than 100 competitions, including the Koningin Elisabeth Competition, Van Cliburn Competition, Tchaikovsky Competition, Santander Piano Competition, Schumann Piano Competition , Sidney Piano Competition.
