Born in Ghent, in 1990. Ilia comes from a very musical family who was educated at the conservatory

from Moscow. lia started his cello studies at the age of 9 with his father Ilia Laporev sr, with Hans Mannes and with

V ladimir Perlin, in Minsk, Belarus.  At the age of 16, Ilia was accepted as a promising student to study with Clemens Hagen, cellist of the famous Hagen Quartet, at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg and then with Justus grimm (Antwerp) and Jerome Pernoo (Conservatoire National of Paris).

From 2015 to 2018, Ilia was principal cellist at the São Paulo State Symphony orchestra (OSESP), with Marin Alsop as music director. During that period in Brazil, he was regularly invited to give masterclasses and concerts at important international music festivals such as 'Festival internacional de musica Campos de Jordão' and 'Festival internacional de musica SESC' in Pelotas.  

In early 2018, since his return to Europe, he regularly plays with leading orchestras such as the London Philharmonic Orchestra and Orchester Philharmonique du Luxembourg as an invited solo and co-cellist.
